HANGING ROCK WINERY - 2019 Poppet Head Chardonnay

Many vineyards supplying our winery are in areas that were a focus of the gold rush of the mid to late 19th century and thus the inspiration for the name 'Poppet Head'. The poppet head was a tower-like lifting structure built over the top of a mine shaft, enabling miners to get the quartz and rock out of the mine to the surface.

Poppet Head Chardonnay is made from grapes produced in the beautiful Goulburn Valley in Victoria. John Ellis is no stranger to cool climate Chardonnay making. During his time at Tisdall winery in the late 70's, early 80's he had the largest planting of cool climate Chardonnay in Australia.

Whilst 2019 was a warm but moderate vintage, with little days over 35 degrees. This bode well for the cool climate regions. Our strategy with this premium fruit is to mature it in new French oak for 12 months. The resulting wine is packed with juicy, buttery, melon flavours and restrained oak character. The structure of the wine - acidity, flavour and oak - all in balance, indicates that this wine will cellar well.

Food Matching: Match with, well, just about anything. A great all-rounder this Chardonnay, try it as an aperitif, with a creamy pasta, or fish.
